Before a Hurricane
  • Register with STAN.  Local emergency management uses STAN to send messages to the public.  Form more information and to register for STAN click here.
  • Develope an emergency plan.
  • Build an emergency kit with enough supplies for at least three days.  Consider the needs of children, elderly, and pets.
  • Make plans to secure your property.  Permanent storm shutters offer the best protection for windows.  A second option is to board up windows with 5/8 marine plywood, cut to fit and ready to install.  Tape does not prevent windows from breaking.
  • Install straps or additional clips to securely fasten your roof to the frame structure.  This will reduce roof damage.
  • Be sure tress and shrubs around your home are well trimmed.
  • Clear loose and clogged rain gutters and downspouts.
  • During hurricane season, coastal residents should never operate their vehicles with less than half a tank of fuel.
