Property tax exemptions reduce the taxable value of property, which in returns lowers tax amounts. Exemptions are available to certain taxpayers based on eligibility criteria set by the Texas Legislature. The types of exemptions are:
- Homestead - available for all homeowners on their residence as long as they reside there on January 1st of the tax year.
- 65 or Older / Disabled Exemption - can be taken in addition to the homestead exemption. Qualifying owners may set their tax bills up on quarter payments.
- Disabled Veteran Exemption - can be taken in addition to the homestead exemption. Amount of exemption depends on the Veteran's disability rating. This exemption can be taken on any property in Texas; it is not limited to the homestead property.
- Agricultural or Timber Exemption
